Tetris Tips: 5 Tricks to Stack Cleaner and Score Higher
Tetris is 40 years old and still the best puzzle game ever made. But if your stacks look like a disaster area, these five tips will fix that.
1. Keep It Flat, Leave a Well
The #1 rule: keep your stack flat (no more than 2-3 blocks difference between columns), and leave one column completely open (the "well"). Drop I-pieces in the well to clear 4 lines at once — that's a "Tetris," the highest-scoring move.
2. Use the 7-Bag System
Modern Tetris deals pieces in bags of 7 (one of each shape). If you've seen 6 pieces without an I, the next one is guaranteed to be I. Build up your well, wait for the I, then unleash a Tetris.
3. Hold Smart
The hold button (C or Shift) lets you save a piece. Use it to store I-pieces for when your well is ready, or to swap out a piece that doesn't fit. Don't hoard — if you're holding an I but no well exists, use it.
4. No Holes
A hole is an empty space under a block. Holes are death — they're almost impossible to fill without dismantling your stack. Always fill from the bottom up. If a piece would create a hole, find another spot.
5. Hard Drop Everything
Stop soft-dropping. Press Space to hard-drop pieces instantly. This gives you more time to plan your next move. At high speeds, that extra half-second is the difference between a clean stack and game over.
