Pac-Man Tips: 5 Tricks to Outsmart the Ghosts

Pac-Man is 40+ years old and still kicking. But if you're like most people, you die around level 3 and blame "bad luck." It's not bad luck — it's ghost patterns.

Here are the five things that actually make you better at Pac-Man.

1. Know Who's Chasing You

Each ghost has a different strategy:

  • Blinky (red): Chases your exact position. The dangerous one.
  • Pinky (pink): Targets 4 tiles ahead of you. She's setting a trap.
  • Inky (cyan): Weird targeting based on Blinky. Hard to predict.
  • Clyde (orange): Chases when far, runs when close. Mostly harmless.

Watch Blinky and Pinky. They're the ones who kill you.

2. Cut Corners Tight

Pac-Man is faster around corners than ghosts. When chased, head for a corner and hug the wall. The ghost takes a wider turn, and suddenly you've got a 3-tile lead. This is your #1 escape tool.

3. Save Power Pellets

Don't eat power pellets just because they're there. They're your emergency button. Save them for when 2+ ghosts are closing in. A well-timed pellet = 4 ghosts eaten = 3000 points.

4. Clear the Outside First

Eat the outer ring of dots before going inside. This gives you open space to run and reduces the areas where ghosts can corner you. Work inward systematically, one quadrant at a time.

5. Use Scatter Mode

Ghosts periodically retreat to their corners (scatter mode) for about 7 seconds. This is your window to eat dots safely. When they switch back to chase mode, be ready to move.

Quick Reference

  • Watch Blinky and Pinky
  • Cut corners tight to escape
  • Save power pellets for emergencies
  • Clear outside dots first
  • Use scatter mode to eat safely

That's the whole game. Ghosts follow rules. Learn the rules, beat the game.
